The Spot is an after-school program where high school girls from the Edgehill neighborhood are nurtured through positive relationships, as they work to become their best selves. It’s a place to hang out, to learn respect for each other, and to grow stronger academically, emotionally, and socially.

Listening to the girls, volunteer leaders at The Spot learned that the girls wanted a place that to hang out that was safe – physically and emotionally. They wanted a chance to become all they can be. In response, the leaders created a welcoming and warm place that starts with a meal and sharing how the day went. From this place of safety and receptivity, the volunteers work to broaden the girls’: (1) academic skills, (2) emotional lives and (3) their world. The Spot offers:

  • Tutoring in academic subjects, study skills and ACT preparation

  • Coaching in healthy interpersonal interactions (e.g., relationship building, appropriate assertiveness, decision making, listening, addressing bullying, understanding cultural differences, learning compassion)

  • Field trips (e.g., Frist Center for the Visual Arts, the Nashville Zoo, Zumba lessons at the Global Education Center, the W.O. Smith Community Music School, the Nashville Farmers’ Market, Vanderbilt University, etc.)

  • Poetry/creative writing

  • Cooking and nutrition

  • Drug and alcohol education

  • Physical health

  • Computers to complete assigned homework and generally improve computer literacy

  • Transportation to and from the program
